The Manchester Storm are delighted to announce the signing of former NHLer John Negrin, from MAC Ujbuda!
The Canadian made his major junior debut for Kootenay Ice at the age of 15 and he eventually went on to make well over 200 appearances in the Western Hockey League (WHL).
After two impressive seasons for Kootenay, Negrin was drafted into the Canadian u18’s World Junior Championship squad. This highly talented squad included several future NHL superstars including: Braden Holtby, Drew Doughty, Logan Couture and Steven Stamkos. The 2006/07 season saw Negrin get taken 70th overall by Calgary Flames and the young prospect would be signed to a three-year entry level NHL contract.
Negrin made three NHL appearances for the Flames in the 2008/09 season, before his draft rights were traded to Winnipeg Jets in early 2012. The next few seasons saw Negrin spend time in the AHL and ECHL, before the blueliner settled in northern New York with the Utica Comets. The experienced defenceman spendt four years with the Comets, before heading to Europe. Negrin left North America having made over 250 AHL appearances representing: Abbotsford Heat, St. John’s IceCaps, Chicago Wolves, Lake Erie Monsters and Utica Comets.
The 2017/18 season was Negrin’s first in Europe, but the smooth-skating defenceman adjusted well to the larger ice-sheets, producing 15 points (2G 13A) in 24 outings for Lørenskog in Norway’s Get Ligaen. After one year in Norway, Negrin made the journey across the continent to MAC Ujbuda. The Hungarian based outfit ply their trade in the Slovakian Tipsport Liga and play out of the nation’s capital, Budapest.
The Storm Head Coach, Ryan Finnerty, had this to say about the new signing:
“Negrin is a versatile d-man who joins us with a lot of experience in pro hockey…I will be counting on him to play big minutes. He will be playing in all situations and be a real leader at the back for our young group”.
