Your Go Goodwins sponsored Manchester Storm are back in action this Saturday as they welcome the Edinburgh Capitals to the Storm Shelter in a 7:00 pm faceoff.

It’s been a tough time recently for the Caps, who suffered from a large number of injuries as well as three players leaving at short notice. There might be some light at the end of the tunnel as their roster was boosted by the arrival of Nikita Kolesnikovs. The 6’4” Latvian defencemen returns for his second spell at the club, after picking up 14 points in 19 games at the end of the 2015-16 season. It is also looking likely that Edinburgh may welcome 2 or 3 players back from injury, they have been missing Michael D’Orazio, Sergei Banashkov, and Dylan Anderson recently, all of whom have a chance of returning at some point this weekend.

Storm come into the weekend after a tight overtime loss at home against Milton Keynes in front of a large crowd at Planet Ice Altrincham. Goals from Mike Hammond, Ciaran Long, Matt Stanisz, and Matt Beca were enough to take the game to overtime but the Lightning were able to find the overtime marker and secure both points. Despite this result, the Storm still find themselves in a battle for first place in the table. Nottingham won in mid-week over the Belfast Giants to push the Storm into second place on 22 points from 16 games, 2 points behind the Panthers who have played 15 games.

The Capitals and the Storm have faced off twice already this season, both ending with Storm victories. The last meeting saw the Storm take on a very shortbenched Capitals side on the end of a road stretch, and the Storm took advantage winning 9-0. Dane Byers grabbed a hattrick, while Mike Hammond and Jay Rosehill grabbed a brace each, with Stanisz and Moffatt rounding out the scoring. Mike Clemente and Ashley Smith sharing a 17-shot shutout. It was a much tighter game in the first meeting of the sides in Murrayfield, but Storm once again came out on top 3-1. Goals from Dane Byers, Luke Moffatt, and Shane Bakker enough to get both points on the night.

One to watch: Marek Tvrdon is a former Detroit Red Wings prospect, and has started the season strongly with 6 goals and 6 assists from 13 games. When on-form he can be very dangerous offensively.
